Here is an interesting post from Indymedia about a community radio station in Guatemala. By the shores of Lake Atitlan, Radio San Pedro broadcasts to the local population in Spanish and Tzuthil. It appears to be makeshift but a lot of fun and a serious way of communicating with the local population on issues which are important to them. It is an example of the importance of community radio and why struggles continue to keep it within the public sphere. The post is by Tom Allan, an independent radio journalist. Central governments, it seems, are always looking to privatise, and restrict access to, the airwaves. Licencing is one way of doing it, is the push towards digital radio in the UK another way?
